Eco-Schools Show 2011

The Young People’s Trust for the Environment headed up to Bolton last week to join thousands of people in the 2011 Eco-Schools Show.  The show is the largest sustainable schools event in England attracting over 2000 primary and secondary school children and teachers.

It was our first time at the show and it was great to see so many children and adults keen to learn more about the environment and sustainability.  We met lots of pupils who were planting vegetables at school, making bug hotels, monitoring their schools’ solar panels and much more!  What is great is that any projects undertaken by schools on topics such as the environment, sustainability, conservation and renewable energy is eligible for our TOTAL Green School Awards 2012.

Our latest project which will start this September in the Bath, Bristol and North East Somerset area is ‘Roots to Green Living’ where a dedicated Education Officer will provide eight lucky schools free support for their environmental work for a period of three years.  Throughout this time they will be helping to develop and sustain environmental projects for their school grounds and assisting with the integration of environmental studies into the Curriculum - this is an opportunity not to be missed!

The Eco-Schools Show made it clear just how engaged and enthralled children become when their work concerns their natural environment.  Schools across the UK have massive potential to make small differences to their operations which have big impacts not only to the environment but also to the children and their understanding of the problems we face in the future.
